We are working on building robust, reliable AI. If that resonates with you, we warmly encourage you to explore the paths below and get in touch. Above all, we value curiosity, creativity, and a genuine enthusiasm for solving difficult problems. As we work closely as a team, you should be comfortable communicating in English on a daily basis (reading, writing, and speaking). Whatever stage you are at, we look forward to hearing from you!
We are always glad to welcome new postdocs. If a few years of ambitious, cutting-edge research in a collaborative group sound like your next step, please email Wieland with a research statement, your CV, a list of two referees, code samples, and your transcripts. As a postdoc, you will spend two to three years working on challenging problems, mentoring Ph.D. students, and developing the skills to become an independent researcher.
We are always pleased to meet prospective PhD students. We recruit exclusively through three doctoral programs, so applying through one of them is the way to join us:
Applications usually open in November, and you will typically need a Master’s degree — though in exceptional cases a four-year Bachelor’s may suffice. A PhD with us usually lasts three to four years, fully funded, with a scholarship that allows you to live comfortably in Tübingen. And no, you do not need to speak German.
Are you already partway through a PhD elsewhere? If you are in your second or third year and can spend at least six months with us (good research takes time!), we would be glad to hear from you — simply apply through our application form.
We often have room to host project or internship connected to our current research. As the field moves quickly, we do not maintain a fixed list of topics; instead, we shape them together around your interests and our ongoing work. It helps to be comfortable with mathematics and coding (ideally in Python / PyTorch) and to have some grounding in machine learning or computer vision, whether through coursework or your own projects. Past interns and thesis students continued their studies / researchs at EuroLLM, Cambridge and ETH Zurich. We recommend browsing our past research before you apply through our application form.
